Unit 1: The First Americans

Learning Reflection Box

A.    What are you currently learning about in Social Studies? Give some examples

of what you have learned this unit.

We are currently learning about the Native Americans and how the geography of their land affected their

culture.

B.    What do you enjoy about this particular SS unit?  Explain.

I particularly enjoyed choosing one specific tribe, and learning more about it and pretrneding to be a Native

American in our presentations, because it gave me a deeper look into what life was like for them.

C.    What do you find challenging about this particular SS unit?  Explain.

I found finding some information on my tribe was difficult. Specifically, what my tribe meant in English and

some of the distinguishing geography features in the region.

D.    What is something you have done well in this SS unit?  Explain.

I think I did well on my research for the presentation. Before I started writing the three paragraphs, I did

a lot of research so that I knew what I was talking about when I presented.

E.    What is something you would like to improve?  Explain on how you plan to

make improvements.

I would like to improve on my Google Tour. I was pretty new to it this year, and I want to develop my skills

on Google Tours. I am planning to make improvements by exploring the website more, and learning more

tricks to use, and how to fix some of the glitches.

This unit's essential question is "How did "place" impact the lifestyles and cultures of the original Americans?" To answer this question I would say "place" impacted the lifestyles and cultures by influencing specifically food choice, clothing, transportation, technology, housing, etc. For example, the tribe I chose to present about was the Shawnee tribe. The Shawnee tribe lived in a mostly cool area with plateus, rivers and forests. One way that "place" impacted the lifestyle and culture of my tribe was with their food choice. Since they lived near both forests and rivers, they had the choice of either hunting or fishing for their food. There are many aspects of how place could affect the culture and lifestyles of the people in that region. Some of those aspects include, climate, distinguising geography features, animal population, and vegetation. In this unit we have mostly been talking about how place impacted the lifestyle and culture of the Native Americans. However, place is still continuing to affect the lifestyle and culture of people today. One example is here in Hong Kong. we are surrounded by water and large mountains. Two big aspects of the HK culture is hiking and of course dragonboating. If it wasn't for our access to huge hills and water, we may not have developed this aspect of our culture. In conclusion, place can impact the lifestyle and culture of people in many ways, but without its effects no culture could be the same as it is today.
